The story of Ollie
Ollie is a pet form of Oliver, and is now often given as a name on its own. Oliver reached English through French. It is usually linked with the Latin word for an olive tree, though a Germanic origin has also been suggested. Elsewhere Ollie can be short for Olivia or Olive, but in the Irish figures it appears only for boys.
In Ireland Ollie was first recorded in 2007. It rose quickly and reached number 31 in 2021 with 187 babies. Oliver is counted by the CSO as a separate name.
Ollie took off earlier in Northern Ireland, where its best position was 18th, in 2016.
