The story of Éada
Éada is one of the newest Irish girls’ names, and its origin is not clear. We have not found a reliable source that explains it as a given name, so the meaning is best left as uncertain.
The same form does turn up in Irish place-names. Glenade in County Leitrim is Gleann Éada in Irish, and Glenade Lough is Loch Ghleann Éada. That shows Éada is an old element in Irish, but it does not tell us what it meant. It also looks like the start of Éadaoin, though no source we use links the two.
Éada first reached the CSO list in 2019, with 3 girls, and it has grown quickly since. Its best year so far is 2025, when 30 girls were named Éada and it was number 156. It is still rare in Northern Ireland, where 4 girls were given it in 2025.
