The story of Eamon
Eamon comes from Éamann, the Irish form of Edmund. Edmund is an Old English name made from ēad, meaning wealth or prosperity, and mund, meaning protection. Irish speakers took the name and gave it their own shape. It is also written Éamonn and Eamonn.
The best-known bearer is Éamon de Valera, who led the country for decades as Taoiseach and later served as President. Many Irish boys were named after him, and Colm Tóibín’s novel The Heather Blazing has a small scene about exactly that, with two men arguing over how many n’s the name should have.
The name was well used when the CSO records begin, and peaked in 1966 with 107 boys, at number 59. It has become much rarer since, with 11 boys in 2025. The CSO counts Éamon with a fada as a separate spelling, and it has been given only 14 times in all.
