The story of Edith
Edith comes from the Old English name Ēadgȳð. The first part, ēad, meant wealth or good fortune, and the second, gȳð, meant battle or strife. It is one of a small group of Anglo-Saxon names, like Edward and Edmund, that stayed in use after the Norman Conquest. A tenth-century English saint of the same name helped to keep it familiar.
The name is used in the same form in German, Dutch and the Scandinavian languages, and the French spell it Édith. Edie is the usual short form.
In Ireland Edith was quietly given through the 1960s and 1970s, then became rare. It came back in the 2010s, when many parents were choosing older names, and its best year was 2015, with 30 girls and a rank of number 185. In 2025, 8 girls were named Edith. It has been a little more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 138 in 2018.
