The story of Elodie
Élodie is a French name, taken from Alodia. Alodia may be a Gothic name, and it is sometimes explained as joining an element meaning “all” or “other” with one meaning “wealth” or “heritage”. Neither part is certain, so we treat the meaning as open.
The name spread through Saint Alodia, a young Christian martyr of ninth-century Spain. It has long been familiar in France, and in Ireland and Britain it is usually written without the accent.
Elodie first reached the CSO list in 2005. Its biggest year was 2016, with 27 girls, and its best rank came in 2021, at number 179. The CSO did not record fadas or accents before 2018, so our figures add Élodie and Elodie together. In Northern Ireland it reached number 171 in 2023.
