The story of Valentina
Valentina is the feminine form of Valentinus, a Roman family name that comes from the Latin valens, strong or healthy. The male form gave English Valentine, and Valentina is used across Italy, Spain, Latin America and eastern Europe.
The best-known Valentina is Valentina Tereshkova, the Soviet cosmonaut who became the first woman in space in 1963. The name has a Dublin link too: relics said to be those of Saint Valentine are kept in Whitefriar Street Church.
Valentina first appears in the CSO records in 2007. It has grown slowly since, and its best year was 2023, when 17 girls were given the name and it reached number 237. In Northern Ireland it was given to five girls in 2025.
