The story of Matteo
Matteo is the Italian form of Matthew. It goes back through Latin Matthaeus and Greek Matthaios to a Hebrew name meaning “gift of the Lord”. Another Italian form of the same name is Mattia. The Spanish spelling, Mateo, has one “t”.
Matthew is the name of one of the twelve apostles and the traditional author of the first gospel, which is why forms of the name are found all over Europe. In Italy it is also a surname, as in De Matteo.
Matteo first appears in the CSO records in 2002 and stayed rare for years. It has climbed since around 2020. Its best year was 2024, with 44 boys at number 125, and 41 boys got the name in 2025. The CSO counts Mateo as a separate name. It is much rarer in Northern Ireland.
