The story of Ezra
Ezra is a Hebrew name from a root meaning “help”. It reached English through the Bible and has been used as a first name and a surname.
In the Bible, Ezra is a Jewish priest and scribe of the fifth century BC who led a group of exiles home from Babylon. The Book of Ezra, which tells part of his story, is one of the books of the Old Testament.
Ezra first appears in the CSO records in 2001 but stayed very rare until the late 2010s. Its biggest year was 2018, with 38 boys, and its best rank was number 151 in 2025. The contrast with Northern Ireland is striking. There it reached number 23 in 2023, and 47 boys got the name in 2025, more than in the whole Republic.
