Harrison began as a surname in the north of England, first recorded in the fourteenth century. It means “son of Harry”. In the Middle Ages Harry was the usual spoken form of Henry, so the surname is really “son of Henry”. Some families used Harrison and Harris interchangeably.
Like many English surnames, it has been used as a first name for a long time. The actor Harrison Ford is probably its most famous bearer.
Harrison first reached the CSO list in 1999. It had the most babies in 2016, with 57 boys, and its best combined rank was number 117 in 2017. It is noticeably more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was number 79 in 2025 and reached 74th in 2019. In 2025, 47 boys were named Harrison in the Republic, and the CSO ranked it 118th.
