The story of Hollie
Hollie is a spelling of Holly, the name taken from the evergreen tree with prickly leaves and red berries that is so closely tied to Christmas. Holly as a girls’ name got a lift from Holly Golightly, the heroine of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, played by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film.
The CSO counts each spelling separately, and Holly is by far the more common of the two. Hollie reached the CSO list in 1984 and grew slowly through the 1990s and 2000s. In 2012 it had its best year, with 92 girls, when it reached number 77.
The spelling has done relatively better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 41 in 2012.
