Hudson began as an English surname meaning “son of Hudd”, Hudd being a personal name used in the Middle Ages. Like Harrison and Jackson, it has moved from surname to first name in recent decades.
The best-known bearer is the English explorer Henry Hudson, who sailed for the Dutch and English in the early 1600s. The Hudson River in New York and Hudson Bay in Canada are named after him.
Hudson first appears in the CSO records in 2012. Its best year in Ireland was 2023, when 38 boys were named Hudson and it reached number 143. It is much more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was number 64 in 2025, its best rank there so far.
