The story of Juliet
Juliet is the English form of the Italian Giulietta, a small form of Giulia, so it means “little Julia”. Julia in turn comes from the Julii, an old Roman family whose best-known member was Julius Caesar. The French Juliette is a close cousin.
The name is inseparable from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where Juliet Capulet falls for Romeo, the son of her family’s enemies. The story was set in Verona, and a house there is still shown to visitors as Juliet’s home.
In Ireland Juliet has been given throughout the CSO records. It was never common, but it had a good spell in the 2010s. Its busiest year was 2012, with 32 girls, and its best rank was number 178 in 2017. In 2025, 8 girls were named Juliet.
