The story of Charlotte
Charlotte came into English from French in the seventeenth century. It is a feminine form of Charles, made with a small French ending, and Charles goes back to a Germanic word for a free man. Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, gave her name to a number of places, including towns in North America.
Charlotte has been given in Ireland throughout the CSO records, though for decades only to a few dozen girls a year. It rose through the 2000s and peaked in 2016 with 151 girls. Its best rank came two years later, when it reached number 39 in 2018.
It is far more popular in Northern Ireland, where it has been one of the leading girls’ names in recent years. It reached 6th there in 2024, and was still 15th in 2025.
