The story of Robyn
Robyn is a spelling of Robin, which began in medieval France as a pet form of Robert, with the small ending -in. Robert comes from old Germanic words for “fame” and “bright”. The robin redbreast takes its English name from the same pet name.
In much of Europe Robin is still mainly a boys’ name. In Ireland, though, the Robyn spelling is given almost only to girls.
Robyn first appears in the CSO records for girls in 1982 and has grown slowly and steadily since. It reached its best rank, number 19, in 2025. The most girls were named Robyn in 2015, when there were 237. The name is much less common in Northern Ireland, where it ranked 61st in 2025. The CSO counts Robyn and Robin as separate names.
