The story of Robin

Robin began in medieval France as a pet form of Robert, made with the small ending -in. It came into English in the Middle Ages, and the outlaw Robin Hood of the old ballads made it famous. It is still a common surname in France.

The garden bird took its English name from the same pet name. As a girls’ name Robin is linked with the bird as well, and Robyn, a spelling used mostly for girls, is counted separately by the CSO.

Irish boys and girls have both been named Robin since the 1960s, in small but steady numbers. In 2025, 28 boys and 22 girls got the name. For girls its best year was 2018, when 33 were registered and it reached a combined rank of number 162. For boys its best rank was number 151 in 1985.
