The story of Remy
Remy is the English spelling of the French name Rémy, which comes from the Latin name Remigius. It is usually explained as “oarsman”, from the Latin word for a rower. St Remigius was a bishop of Reims in the fifth century, remembered for baptising Clovis, king of the Franks. Many people now also know it from Remy, the rat who wants to be a chef in the film Ratatouille.
Remy first appears in the CSO records for boys in 2012. Its best year so far was 2022, with 16 boys and a rank of number 277. A few girls get the name too, with four in 2025. The CSO counts Remy, Rémy and Remi as separate names.
It is doing well in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 144 in 2024 and 11 boys were named Remy in 2025.
