The story of Klara

Klara is a spelling of Clara, and the usual one in German, Polish, Czech, Slovene and the Scandinavian languages. Clara comes from the Latin clarus, meaning clear or bright. The name spread in the Middle Ages through St Clare of Assisi, a follower of St Francis who founded the order of nuns known as the Poor Clares.

It sounds almost the same as Clara, and many families choose the K simply because it is the spelling used in their own language or family.

Klara first appears in the CSO records in 1971, but it stayed rare until the 2000s. Its best year so far was 2020, when 26 girls were named Klara and it reached number 177. The CSO counts Klara and Clara as separate names, and Clara is the more common of the two in Ireland.
