The story of Kylie

Kylie is a modern name, and nobody is sure where it came from. It first became popular in Australia. One common explanation links it to a word in Noongar, a language of Western Australia, for a curved throwing stick or boomerang. Others connect it with the Irish surname Kiely. It is often treated as a feminine partner for Kyle, but the two are probably not related.

The name spread well beyond Australia in the late 1980s, when the singer and actor Kylie Minogue became famous around the world.

Kylie first reached the CSO list in 1987, and its best rank came soon after, number 250 in 1989. It has never been common in Ireland, but it has held on, and its biggest year was 2021, with 15 baby girls. In Northern Ireland its best rank was 229, in 1998.
