The story of Lexi
Lexi is a short form of the “Alex” names: Alexa, Alexandra, Alexia and Alexis. These all go back to Greek, through the name Alexander. Lexie and Lexy are other spellings, and Lexi is sometimes a nickname for boys called Alex too, though it is mostly a girls’ name.
Lexi first reached the CSO list in 2006, and it rose fast. Its best year was 2013, when 127 girls were named Lexi and it reached number 56. It has fallen back a long way since, to 12 girls in 2025. The CSO counts Lexie as a separate name. The same pattern shows in Northern Ireland, where Lexi peaked at number 40, also in 2013.
