The story of Lochlan
Lochlan is a variant of Lachlan, a name best known in Scotland. Both are usually traced to Lochlann, the name that Irish and Scottish Gaelic give to Scandinavia, or more exactly Norway. The old word seems to have meant a land of lakes or marshes, and Welsh has a matching name for the same place.
So the name looks back to the Viking age, when people from the north raided and later settled around the coasts of Ireland and Scotland. The CSO counts Lochlan, Lachlan and Lochlann as separate names.
In Ireland, Lochlan first reached the CSO list in 2004 with 4 boys, and it grew slowly after that. Its best year so far is 2025, when 23 boys were named Lochlan and it was number 206 overall. In Northern Ireland its highest place was 163rd, in 2022.
