The story of Lorenzo
Lorenzo is the Italian and Spanish form of Laurence. It comes from the Latin Laurentius, which meant a man from Laurentum, an old Roman town on the coast south-west of Rome. The town’s name is usually linked to the laurel tree, whose leaves the Romans used for victory wreaths.
The best-known Lorenzo in history is Lorenzo de’ Medici, “the Magnificent”, who ruled Florence in the fifteenth century and supported the artists of the Renaissance. Ireland has its own link to the family of names through St Laurence O’Toole, Archbishop of Dublin, whose Irish name was Lorcán.
In Ireland Lorenzo has been a rare choice for most of the CSO records. Its numbers grew from the 2010s, and 2025 was its biggest year so far, with 16 boys.
