The story of Maryam
Maryam is the Arabic and Persian form of Miriam, the Hebrew name that also gave English Mary and Latin Maria. The meaning of Miriam has never been settled, and many different explanations have been offered, so it is best called uncertain. Maryam, or Mariam, is also the Aramaic form of the name.
In Islam, Maryam is the mother of Jesus and is held in great honour. The nineteenth chapter of the Qur’an bears her name and tells the story of his birth.
Maryam first appears in the CSO records in 1990. It grew slowly through the 2000s and 2010s and more quickly in the 2020s. Its best year was 2024, when 32 girls were named Maryam and it reached number 145. In 2025 there were 29. The CSO counts Maryam and Mary as separate names.
