The story of Róise

Róise is an Irish form of Rose. Róis is another Irish spelling, and the pet form Róisín, “little rose”, is a name in its own right.

Rose itself has two roots that have run together. It came to England with the Normans as Roese or Rohese, from old Germanic words meaning fame and kind. Over time it was heard simply as the name of the flower, from the Latin rosa, and that is how most people understand it today.

Róise first reached the CSO list in 1981, but stayed rare until the 2000s. It has climbed since, and in 2025 it reached number 103, its best place so far, with 46 girls. The CSO did not record fadas before 2018, so these figures count Róise and Roise together. It has done even better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 79 in 2022.
