★ What does Rose mean?
Rose, the flower
From the flower (Latin rosa), though some medieval uses come from a Germanic name.

The story of Rose
Rose is now read as a flower name, from the Latin rosa. Its history is a little tangled, though. The Normans brought a Germanic name, written Rohese or Roese, built from words for fame and kind, and some early English Roses probably owe their name to it. Over time the two merged, and the flower won out.
In Irish the flower is rós, and the pet form Róisín, “little rose”, is a popular name in its own right. In the old song Róisín Dubh, the “dark little rose” stands for Ireland itself.
Rose was number 49 in 1964, and the most girls were given it in 1966, with 141 babies. It then faded, and by 2000 only 14 girls a year were named Rose. It has been back in the top 100 every year since 2012, and was number 59 in 2025. In Northern Ireland its best place was 37th, in 2016.
