The story of Meadow
Meadow is simply the English word for an open field of grass, herbs and wildflowers, often one kept for making hay. It has no old story or saint behind it. It belongs to a newer group of nature names, like Willow, River and Skye, that parents have taken straight from the landscape.
In Ireland Meadow first appears in the CSO records in 2003. For years only a handful of girls a year were given it. It has been climbing since the 2010s, and 2025 was its best year yet, with 20 baby girls. That put it at number 217 in 2025, combined, up from number 433 in 2015.
It has been used in Northern Ireland too, where its best rank was number 159 in 2023.
