The story of Mohammed
Mohammed is one of many ways of writing the Arabic name Muhammad in English letters. The name means “praiseworthy” and comes from an Arabic verb meaning to praise. It is the name of the prophet of Islam, and in its various spellings it is among the most common boys’ names in the world.
In Ireland this spelling first reached the CSO list in 1980. Its busiest year was 2010, with 24 babies, and 7 boys were named Mohammed in 2025.
The CSO counts each spelling separately, so Muhammad, Mohammad and Mohammed each appear on their own. Muhammad is now by far the most common of the three in Ireland, and taken together they give a truer picture of how popular the name is.
