The story of Mya
Mya is a modern name, and its origin is not certain. It is usually taken as a spelling of Maya or Mia, written the way it sounds. Those names have several different roots in different languages, so there is no single meaning for Mya. Separately, Mya is also a Burmese name of unrelated origin.
Mya first appears in the CSO records in 2000 and grew quickly through that decade. Its best rank was number 113 in 2006, and the most girls in one year was 54, in 2012. It has eased back since, with 17 girls in 2025.
It has always been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 44 in 2009.
