The story of Nikodem
Nikodem is the Polish form of Nicodemus. The name goes back to the Greek Nikodemos, made from nike, victory, and demos, the people, so it means “victory of the people”.
Nicodemus appears in the Gospel of John. He was a Pharisee who came to talk with Jesus at night, later spoke up for him before the council, and helped Joseph of Arimathea to bury him. He is honoured as a saint in several Christian churches.
Nikodem first reached the CSO list in 2006, at the time when many Polish families were settling in Ireland. It rose quickly, and its best year was 2010, when 32 boys were named Nikodem and it was number 192. In Northern Ireland it is less common, but 2025 was its best year there, at 270th.
