The story of Roman
Roman comes from the Latin Romanus, meaning a person from Rome or a citizen of the Roman Empire. The same word gives us everyday English terms like Roman numerals and the roman typeface. The name of Rome itself is traditionally linked to Romulus, the city’s legendary founder.
As a first name it has been used across Europe for a long time, and spellings like Romano and Romain are its close relatives.
Roman is a new arrival in Ireland. It first appears in the CSO records in 2001 and stayed rare until around 2020. Its biggest year was 2022, with 42 boys, and its best rank was number 132 in 2024. It follows a similar path in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 108 in 2024.
