The story of Saibh
Saibh looks like a lighter spelling of Sadhbh, the old Irish name that is usually explained as “sweet”. Dropping the silent “dh” leaves a name that is shorter to write but, in most Irish families, is said just the same. We have not found a dictionary entry for Saibh itself, so its link to Sadhbh is the best explanation rather than a certainty.
It is a young name in the records. It first reached the CSO list in 2001, when 4 baby girls were given it. It has held a small, steady place ever since, and its best year was 2016, with 18 babies and a rank of number 254 in 2016.
The CSO counts Saibh and Sadhbh as separate names, so the two spellings each have their own page here. Saibh is rare in Northern Ireland, where it only reached the list in 2024.
