The story of Selena
Selena is most often linked to Selene, the goddess of the moon in Greek myth, whose name was also the everyday Greek word for the moon. It may also be a form of Selina, a name that has been traced to Latin caelum, sky or heaven. The two have blended so much that it is hard to tell them apart.
The name is widely known today through two American singers: Selena Quintanilla, the Tejano star, and Selena Gomez.
Selena first appears in the CSO records in 1969. Its best rank was number 284 in 1976, but its busiest year was 2024, when 14 girls were given it. In 2025 there were 13.
