The story of Síomha

Síomha is the modern spelling of Síthmaith, an Irish name from the early Middle Ages. It is made from two Irish words, síth, “peace”, and maith, “good”. Síothmhaith is another modern way to write it, but Síomha is the form parents use today.

One early bearer on record is Síthmaith of Clonboreann, who died in 771. The name came back into use with the revival of Irish names in the twentieth century.

Síomha first appears in the CSO records in 1984, and stayed rare until the 2010s. It has grown steadily since, and 2025 was its best year yet, with 37 girls and a place at number 127. The CSO only recorded fadas from 2018, so older entries are spelled Siomha; these figures combine the two. It is still very rare in Northern Ireland.
