The story of Stevie
Stevie began as a pet form of Stephen and Steven, and later of Stephanie too. Stephen comes from the Greek stephanos, a crown or wreath, and it was the name of the first Christian martyr. Stevie is one of a group of friendly short forms, like Frankie and Charlie, that are now given to girls and boys as names in their own right.
Many well-known people have gone by Stevie, often as a nickname. They include the singers Stevie Wonder and Stevie Nicks and the English poet Stevie Smith, whose real first name was Florence.
In Ireland Stevie has been given mostly to girls. The girls’ name first appears in the CSO records in 2011, and its best year was 2024, when 27 girls were named Stevie and it reached number 169. A few boys are given the name too, but not enough to appear in every year’s list.
