The story of Victoria
Victoria is simply the Latin word for victory. The Romans also gave the name to their goddess of victory, their version of the Greek Nike. The boys’ name Victor comes from the same root.
The name is tied in most minds to Queen Victoria, who reigned over Britain and Ireland for most of the nineteenth century. Places around the world were named after her, from a state in Australia to a city in Canada.
In Ireland Victoria has never been a chart-topper, but it has held a steady place for a long time. Its biggest year was 1982, with 91 babies, and its best rank came later, at number 77 in 2007. It has become less common lately, with 28 babies in 2025. In Northern Ireland it once did better, reaching number 25 in 1999.
