The story of Antonia
Antonia is the feminine form of Antonius, the name of an old Roman family. Women born into that family were all called Antonia, as was the Roman custom. Anthony and Antonio come from the same source. Nobody is quite sure what Antonius first meant. Meanings such as “priceless” are often attached to it, but they are later explanations rather than the name’s real roots.
The name is used across Europe, especially in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Maltese, and English speakers know it in its Latin form. Toni and Tonia are its usual short forms.
In Ireland Antonia first reached the list in 1966, and it has stayed a quiet choice ever since. It had its best year in 2015, when 21 girls were named Antonia, placing it at number 244. In Northern Ireland its best rank was number 197 in 1998.
