The story of Cameron

Cameron is a Scottish surname that became a first name. It comes from the Gaelic Camshròn, made of cam (crooked, bent) and sròn (nose), so it began as a nickname for someone with a crooked nose. Campbell is built the same way, from cam and a word for mouth.

It is mostly a boys’ name, though a small number of Irish girls have been given it too, mainly around the turn of the century.

Cameron was rare in Ireland until the 1990s. Its best rank was number 86 in 2000, and the most babies came in 2007, with 75. It has eased back since, and 21 boys were named Cameron in 2025. It was more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 28 in 2002.
