The story of Corey
Corey came into use as a first name from a surname, and the surname itself has more than one possible source. One line runs back to an Old Norse personal name, Kóri, which may in turn have come from an old Irish word for a troop or company. In Ireland the surname can also be an English form of Ó Comhraidhe, a name more often written Curry. None of these explanations is settled, so its meaning is best left open.
Corey first appears in the CSO records in 1969. It became a regular choice in the 1990s and its best rank came in 1998, when it reached number 108. The most boys in a single year was 63 in 2008. It has been falling since, with 7 boys named Corey in 2025.
The name has been much more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 37 in 2006. Cory and Korey are counted as separate names by the CSO.
