The story of Croíadh
Croíadh is one of several spellings of Croía, a recent name built on the Irish word croí, “heart”. The -adh ending borrows the look of Fiadh, but it doesn’t change the sound. Like Croía, it is a new creation rather than an old name, and the form itself is not a word in Irish.
Croíadh first reached the CSO list in 2010. Its best year so far was 2025, with 36 babies and a place at number 130. The CSO counts Croía and Croíadh separately, and it did not record fadas before 2018, so our figures add Croíadh and Croiadh together. In Northern Ireland it reached number 126 in 2025.
