The story of Elisa

Elisa is most often explained as a short form of Elisabeth, the name that goes back to the Hebrew Elisheba, “my God is an oath”. English dictionaries also treat it as a spelling of Elise. Some writers link it instead with Elissa, the legendary founding queen of Carthage, but that connection is less certain.

In Ireland it first reached the CSO list in 1972 and stayed rare for a long time. It became more common in the 2010s, and its best year was 2022, with 23 babies and a rank of number 204 in 2022. In 2025, 10 girls were named Elisa.

The CSO counts Elisa, Eliza and Elise as separate names, so each has its own page here.
