The story of Lennon
Lennon began as an Irish surname. It is an English form of two older Irish family names: Ó Leannáin, from a personal name built on leannán (sweetheart, lover), and Ó Lonáin, from Lonán, which means “little blackbird”. Like many Irish surnames, it has more recently been taken up as a first name.
The best-known bearer by far is John Lennon of the Beatles. For many parents the name carries a musical link as much as an Irish one.
As a boys’ name in Ireland, Lennon first appears in the CSO records in 1981, with 5 babies, and then not again until 2000. Since then it has been given every year. Its best rank was number 180 in 2007, and 17 boys were named Lennon in 2025. A small number of girls have been given the name since 2023.
