The story of Ógie
Ógie is one of the newest names on the Irish list, and no dictionary we checked records it yet. The spelling suggests the Irish word óg, meaning young, with the friendly -ie ending that English uses for pet names. Óg is familiar from Tír na nÓg, the land of youth, and it is often added after a name to mean “the younger”, as in Seán Óg. Whether Ógie grew from that use or started as a nickname is not recorded, so its meaning is best treated as uncertain.
The name first reached the CSO list in 2022, given to just three boys. Since then it has grown every year, and in 2025 it was given to 22 boys, reaching number 210. It has not yet appeared in the Northern Ireland figures.
