Olly is a pet form of Oliver, and occasionally of the girl’s name Olivia. Oliver is an old name that reached England with the Normans. It is often linked to the olive tree, although its real origin is less certain. Like Alfie and Charlie, Olly has become a full name in its own right in recent years.
Olly first reached the Irish list in 2009. Its biggest year was 2019, when 29 boys were named Olly, placing it at number 188. It has been quieter since, with 4 boys in 2025. The CSO counts Ollie separately, and Ollie is the more common spelling. Olly has done better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 91 in 2012.
