The story of Paudie
Paudie is an English spelling of the Irish Páidí, one of the familiar pet forms of Pádraig, the Irish form of Patrick. Páidín is a related pet form made with the small ending -ín. For a long time Paudie was mostly a nickname for a boy christened Pádraig or Patrick, but it is now registered as a name in its own right.
Many of the best-known Paudies are hurlers and Gaelic footballers. The Kerry footballer and manager Páidí Ó Sé is often written Paudie in English.
Paudie first appears in the CSO records in 2010 and has climbed since. It reached number 136 in 2024, its best rank so far, and in 2025 it peaked with 39 babies. The CSO counts Páidí as a separate name.
