The story of Séimí
Séimí is a short Irish boys’ name. It looks and sounds like a pet form of Séamus, the Irish form of James, in the same way that Páidí comes from Pádraig. But we have not found a dictionary or reference source that sets out its history, so we leave its meaning as uncertain.
What is clear is that it is a name of the last few years. It first appears in the CSO records in 2004, and it stayed very rare until about 2020. Since then it has climbed every year or so.
The year 2025 was its best so far, with 48 boys. The CSO counts Séimí and Seimi separately, and in 2025 all 48 were spelled with fadas, which put Séimí at number 115. It is still barely used in Northern Ireland.
