The story of Amira
Amira comes from Arabic and is the feminine partner of the boys’ name Amir. Both are linked to the Arabic word behind the title emir, a ruler or commander, and Amira is usually explained as “princess”. It is used across the Arabic-speaking world and well beyond it.
Amira first appears in the CSO records in 2000, with just a handful of girls. For years it stayed small, but it has grown every year since 2021. Its best year so far is 2025, when 36 girls were named Amira and it reached number 130. Ten years earlier it was down at 464.
It is less common in Northern Ireland, where 6 girls were given the name in 2025.
