Ayra is a modern name, and we have not found a solid source for its meaning. It is used by families from several different backgrounds, and it may be understood in different ways in each, so it is safest to say its origin is uncertain. It sits in a group of short, open-sounding names alongside Aria, Arya and Ayla.
The best-known bearer is the Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, though that is a stage name rather than the one she was born with.
Ayra is new to Ireland. It first appears in the CSO records in 2014 and has risen quickly since. 2025 was its best year yet, with 16 girls, putting it at number 267. It also appeared in Northern Ireland for the first time in 2025.
