The story of Zayn
Zayn comes from the Arabic word zayn, meaning beauty or grace. It is used as a boys’ name across the Arabic-speaking and wider Muslim world, and it has also caught on more widely in Britain and Ireland.
The best-known bearer is the singer Zayn Malik, who became famous as a member of One Direction from 2010. The name was already in use before then, but his fame made it familiar to many more people in Ireland and Britain.
Zayn first appears in the CSO records in 2012, with just 3 boys. It has grown since, and its best year so far was 2023, when 24 boys were named Zayn and it reached number 201. In 2025, 13 boys got the name. Zain, a different spelling of the same name, is counted separately.
