The story of Kody
Kody is a modern spelling of Cody, which began as an Irish surname. Cody has more than one source. In some families it is an English form of Ó Cuidighthigh, “descendant of Cuidightheach”, a byname for a helpful person. In others it comes from Mac Óda, “son of Óda”. The surname was later taken up as a first name, especially in America, and the K spelling followed.
The CSO counts Kody and Cody as separate names, and Cody is much the more common of the two in Ireland.
Kody first appears in the CSO records in 2003. It has been given to a few more boys in the 2020s, and its biggest year was 2023, with 14 boys. Its best rank was number 293 in 2024. It is used a little more in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 181 in 2023, from a much smaller number of births.
